Michelle Dorrance is an American tap dancer, choreographer, and director. She was born on May 29, 1979, in North Carolina, United States. Dorrance began dancing at the age of three and studied tap dance with Gene Medler, who was a former member of the Nicholas Brothers. She graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in dance.
Dorrance is considered a leading figure in the contemporary tap dance scene and is known for her innovative choreography and improvisational approach. She co-founded the Dorrance Dance company in 2011, which has performed in venues around the world including the Kennedy Center and the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.
Dorrance has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the arts, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 2015, known as the "genius grant." She has also choreographed for Broadway productions and collaborated with musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and Toshi Reagon.
